IES Juan de Herrera
Our school is located in the north-western area of Madrid. It has about 700 students in the morning shift and about 200 students in the evening shift. There are about 70 teachers. Students in the morning shift are aged 11 to 18/19. In the evening shift there are mostly adults and working people. After the first four years our students get a diploma in compulsory secondary education. After that, they can study baccalaureate for two years. We have a great amount of migrants from many different nations. We are a so-called "priority centre": we have many students with specific needs, not only migrants but also Spanish, supported by special teachers, social workers and therapists. Diversity, one of the most enriching characteristics of our school, is the reason why we find it most interesting that our students learn to develop their varied abilities in a global world. We have programmes for students with special learning difficulties and low academic performance and for many years we have been in involved in launching international initiatives with the use of English as lingua franca.
